Car Total Cost of Ownership Calculator
Combine loan, road tax, insurance, fuel, maintenance and depreciation into one true monthly cost.
Car & Loan
Insurance and maintenance are your own estimates or quotes -- this calculator doesn't price them for you. Loan uses the post-2026 reducing-balance method; road tax follows JPJ's cc/kW schedule.

How This Is Calculated
- Loan: monthly installment uses the post-2026 reducing-balance method, with the EIR estimated from your flat rate (same approach as the Hire Purchase Calculator).
- Road tax: looked up from JPJ's cc-based schedule (petrol/diesel) or the 2026 kW-based EV schedule, same as the Road Tax Calculator.
- Fuel/energy: monthly distance ÷ consumption × fuel price (petrol/diesel), or distance × cost-per-km (EV).
- Resale & loan payoff: the car's value is depreciated year by year at your chosen rate. If you sell before the loan is fully paid, any remaining loan balance is estimated and netted against the resale value -- this can produce negative equity if the car is worth less than what's owed.
- True monthly cost: (total cash outflow − resale value + remaining loan balance) ÷ months of ownership. Insurance and maintenance are your own inputs, not estimated by this calculator.
- Disclaimer: this calculator is a planning guide only, using approximated formulas for loan EIR and road tax -- it does not replace an official quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in a car's total cost of ownership?
Down payment, loan installment, road tax, insurance, fuel/energy and maintenance over your ownership period, netted against the car's resale value and any remaining loan balance.
Why does the monthly true cost differ from just the loan installment?
The loan installment is only one slice of running a car -- road tax, insurance, fuel and maintenance add up on top, while depreciation reduces what you'll get back at resale.
What happens if I sell before the loan is fully paid?
This calculator estimates your remaining loan balance at that point and nets it against resale value, which can show negative equity if you owe more than the car is worth.
